We are already at week 3 of the Season of Creation, our sermon series and our weekly challenges! So far, I have challenged everyone to: Pick up some litter from the earth, and to avoid bottled water-bring your own instead! This week, our challenge picks up from the water bottle challenge:
Choose one single use plastic and try not to use it or buy it this week.
So what is a single use plastic? It’s any item made of plastic, designed with the purpose of throwing it out after using it once. Some common single use plastics are: straws, plastic cutlery, plastic take out containers and cups/bottles, saran wrap, ziploc bags, plastic produce bags.
It can be overwhelming to stop using all single use plastics, because our world seems to be filled with plastic: in our grocery stores, our food aisles, toys and more. So try starting with just one thing, make it simple. Choose an item you commonly use and start being creative about how you can replace it if you need it. For example, in our house, we’ve stopped buying ziploc bags and saran wrap. We use cloth sandwich/snack bags, our plastic and glass storage containers and use beeswax wraps! Or, buy travel silverware and straws for when you grab take out! Remember, sometimes it’s about one step, one small change at a time!
