Christmas Devotional

It’s hard to believe that 2020 is drawing to a close. It’s been a difficult year for all of us, so many changes, so many struggles and fears and losses. Yet even in the midst of this difficult year, we are still invited to stand at the manger in awe of what has come to us once again. Today and in the days to come, we celebrate that the Christ Child has been born for all people. We celebrate that in him, comes the gifts of hope, peace, love and joy. Gifts which help guide us even in the darkest of days. And so, as we celebrate this very different Christmas season, I invite you to turn to the Christ Child and find joy in him. Find joy in the one who comes to bring light and love to the earth. Find joy in the tiny baby whose cry will break through the shadows of the night, sparking joy in those who greet him. Because even in times of despair, it is possible to experience sparks of joy. And when we do, I believe that it is then that we are able to catch a glimmer of the joy God seeks to give to us. A joy that comes to us in Christ, a joy that reminds us that no matter how broken we may feel, there is something more awaiting us. Because the true gift of Christmas is that God comes to earth in Christ, to be with us right where we are, as we are. In Christ comes joy and love, comfort and peace for us, and for all people. Christ comes to heal the brokenhearted, to comfort those who mourn, to bring justice to all the earth. And so, I invite us to approach the manger this Christmas and be open to this gift. Be open to the wonder and awe that comes to us in the Christ Child, and let that wonder fill you with the true joy that reminds us we are not alone. For we are loved. You are loved, for in Christ God comes, for the sake of the world. For the sake of you and for me. For this we give thanks and praise by saying “Merry Christmas!” So Merry Christmas to you and yours.
